NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to release data on Friday showing that fully vaccinated people may be able to transmit the delta variant, a finding that prompted its new masking advice, The New York Times reported Thursday.
CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told the Times in an email that new, unreleased CDC data shows that the delta variant can "thrive" in the airwaves of vaccinated individuals.

She said even those who are vaccinated and infected with the delta variant carry "tremendous" amounts of the virus in the nose and throat.
And it's the aforementioned finding that prompted the CDC to suggest people in certain parts of the country experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases wear masks indoors, according to the report.

The new findings contradict what was previously thought: that vaccinated people did not infect others.
The research was conducted by people outside the CDC, four scientists familiar with the research told the Times.
The CDC is working to analyze and publish the results. The agency expects to publish the research on Friday, an official said.
There are 67,000 new cases per day on average in the United States, as of Thursday.
