NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A baby harbor seal was released back into the wild Friday days after it was rescued from the middle of a Long Island traffic circle.

Police received calls about the approximately 3-month-old seal pup around 6:30 a.m. last Sunday when it was spotted in the parking lot of a beverage store on Lake Avenue just off a busy traffic circle in Riverhead.

Southhampton police officers watched over the seal until the New York Marine Rescue Center came to take over.

The seal, which has since been named "Peconic," was evaluated at the center and then spent a few days recovering, getting fluids and fish.

Rescuers believe the pup had followed some fish up the Peconic River and then climbed out of the water in Grangebel Park before wandering around downtown Riverhead.

Officers with the Southampton Police Department were on hand as rescuers released the seal at Tiana Beach in Hampton Bays Friday morning.

The seal happily scooted its way toward the Atlantic Ocean, briefly pausing at the edge of the water and turning around to bid its human friends goodbye before getting in and swimming away.
