NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – An ultramarathon runner from Long Island will log more than 180 miles over the next week to support veterans and honor service men and women who were killed in action.

Eva Casale started her fifth annual run Sunday at Huntington Town Hall Veterans Plaza in Huntington. She’ll run seven marathons in seven days over the next week.

“Even though we have gone through a pandemic, we have to remember that they serve our county every single day,” Casale said. “It is so important that we always remember and never, never forget.”

Casale normally does her run in April, but it’s taking place in June this year because pandemic restrictions have been eased in businesses throughout her trail. She and her team have been training since February.

“You know a lot of training goes into this every weekend, every Saturday and Sunday are 20 or 20-plus mile runs,” Casale said.

Casale is running in Nassau and Suffolk counties through communities the service members called home.

Along the way, Casale will stop at more than 100 Points of Honor. She’ll place over 300 flowers and flags at the stops all together.

Casale will travel through Huntington, Northport, Long Island National Cemetery, Eisenhower Park, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Calverton, Westhampton, Oyster Bay, Bayville, Glen Cove, Brookhaven, Patchogue, Medford and the South Shore.

The closing ceremony will be held at the Westhampton VFW as Casale and her team cross the final finish line.

Casale asks that American flags be displayed starting Sunday for her “Every Veteran Appreciated Week.”

Her efforts will raise funds to support services and supplies for veterans. More information can be found at goteameva.org.
