A security breach at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey Monday led to evacuation of a terminal and a woman being taken into police custody.
According to NBC 4 in New York, a woman allegedly exited through a security checkpoint at around 10:30 a.m. and the Port Authority Police Department responded, taking her into custody. She was then transferred to University Hospital in Newark for an evaluation.
Port Authority police also said they moved passengers onto the street, and conducted a sweep of the affected areas as a precaution.
Due to the breach, Terminal C of the airport was evacuated.
NBC 4 reported that there were no bomb threats or shootings related to the incident, which is deemed under control. Operations at three impacted gates were up and running again within hours.
No one was seriously injured.
However, the “disturbance caused significant public alarm to ticketed passengers who ran from the disturbance and exited the terminal,” said the outlet. Passengers were re-screened before re-entering the terminal.
Additionally, it is unclear whether the woman simply made a mistake or if they were acting suspiciously before accessing the security door.
