Saquon Barkley appears headed for free agency, which makes it all the more likely that he will be playing in a different uniform for the first time in his NFL career.
If that indeed winds up being the case, Evan can’t help but wonder why the Giants would let him go for nothing when they could have gotten draft compensation for him before the trade deadline last season.
“The Giants, before the trade deadline, didn’t entertain offers on him,” Evan said. “We were told they wouldn’t even take phone calls on him…that tells me you’re serious about keeping a player. Then, the salary cap exploded to a number even Joe Schoen didn’t expect.
“If you don’t tag him, and you have that power to tag him…and allow him to get to free agency…that means you’re gonna lose him. That means the Giants decision was to lose Saquon Barkley for potentially nothing.”
The Giants, after a disastrous start to the season, seemed to be heading towards missing the playoffs by the trade deadline, but they decided to hang onto Barkley. Evan wonders if Schoen would take a mulligan on that decision now.
