Saquon Barkley and Deebo Samuel don’t play the same position, but Boomer sees the Giants potentially using Barkley like the 49ers use their star wide receiver.
While Barkley is still waiting to show that his speed and agility are back to full strength following ACL surgery, Boomer wants to see New York flex some plays where Barkley can get to the sidelines and show off the speed that was so prevalent earlier in his career.
“He’s so fast that I would try to steal a few of the plays they run with Deebo Samuel, and how they get Deebo underneath the quarterback for that little pitch pass, which counts as a completion, and let Saquon do what he does outside the numbers,” Boomer said. “Let him use his speed.”
But Boomer saw the Giants sending a different type of message to Barkley in their preseason opener against the Patriots on Thursday night.
“I know he tried a couple times last night to run up into the line and lower his shoulder, and I’m glad to see that, because that’s a part of it,” Boomer said.
“It seems like they’re trying to send a message to him. ‘You’re gonna be the guy, get out there, be this guy, we’re not gonna baby you.’ I kind of like that mindset as well.”
