Nathaniel Hackett admitted to reporters on Thursday that he could be “pressing” as a coach to get the Jets offense going, and when asked to elaborate, the offensive coordinator suggested that he could be trying to do too much with the playbook.
“Sometimes it's experimenting with too many new things instead of building a foundation or trying to take too many shots,” Hackett said. “Or trying to get unique runs instead of just letting those guys go to work...Sometimes, you just have to let them go out and play.”
BT, who has voiced his frustration with the “unimaginative” Jets offense for much of the season, ripped Hackett for suggesting that his play calling has been anything but restrictive.
“I have watched every single snap of the Jets season this year. I think I’ve seen them throw it downfield - outside of the stupid Hail Mary that got ran back 99 yards - maybe once,” BT said. “This is the most predictable, benign offense…He hasn’t taken any shots.
“I’m bothered by this. It’s insulting our intelligence.”
Hackett hasn’t had much to work with at the quarterback position this season with Aaron Rodgers out since the first quarter of the first game, but BT says the offense should still be able to show some creativity, and Hackett hasn’t allowed it, despite what he said on Thursday.
“I wonder what this man’s credentials really are. That bothers me,” BT said. “You sit down, watch the Jets for three hours every week, and you get so frustrated by a lack of anything that resembles a modern offense, and the offensive coordinator is coming out saying that they’re taking too many shots. It’s the opposite, you’ve done nothing this year.”
