As Gio lamented the bad injury luck for the Knicks after a seventh loss in their last nine games, he proceeded to go down the rabbit hole of injury misfortune that seems to have plagued all New York sports teams in recent years.
"How many times? Whether it's baseball or football with Aaron Rodgers and Daniel Jones. The Yankees and the Mets with Edwin Diaz and Aaron Judge," Gio said. "Now Julius Rabble and OG Anunoby. It's on and on.
"Let's go back to last year, baseball season. Edwin Diaz, done before the season starts. Then, Pete Alonso ends up getting hurt, comes back, takes him a while to get going…Justin Verlander started the season on the IL. Max Scherzer got hurt again. Quintana, hurt, took him months to come back. The Yankees, Aaron Judge missed a massive amount of time with a toe injury, and it took the wind out of their sails completely, and they missed the playoffs."
Gio says the local hockey teams seem to be the only ones who haven't been bit by the injury bug (aside from the Devils earlier this season), and not coincidentally, all three were in the playoffs last season. Every other New York team seems to be cursed.
"Football season, Aaron Rodgers, four plays in, Achilles. Done," Gio said. "Daniel Jones, out for the year. Saquon Barkley…he's out 3-4 weeks. It's nuts. Now you're here, you got the Knicks…Julius Randle may not come back. OG Anunoby comes in, the roster is perfect, what a great trade, he gets surgery. It's crazy."
