Edwin Diaz will continue to throw bullpen sessions and work his way back from knee surgery, but according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, the star closer will not pitch in 2023.
Per DiComo, New York will take the cautious approach with Diaz, and allow him a full offseason and spring training before returning in 2024. The righty will continue to throw bullpens until the end of the month.
Diaz, who tore his patellar tendon while celebrating a victory on the field during the World Baseball Classic, threw a 20-pitch bullpen session in Port St. Lucie this past weekend, and had maintained a desire and confidence in pitching this season. But, given the Mets' place in the standings, the team felt it was best to play it safe.
Diaz, an All-Star last season after pitching to a dominant 1.31 ERA, signed a record five-year, $102 million contract this past offseason. He will turn 30 next season.
