The Mets have reported interest in free agent J.D. Martinez, in what would address a clear need at DH, but Sal made it clear on Wednesday that he wants no part of the 36-year-old.
"Martinez will come here two years too late…then he'll come here and suck," Sal said. "I wouldn't touch him.
"If the Mets are listening, I'm begging you. Please, PLEASE do not get J.D. Martinez! Get anybody else. [Jorge] Soler, Teoscar Hernandez, whatever other DH you want. Justin Turner, bring him in here."
Martinez has been an All-Star in his last five seasons (excluding the shortened 2020 campaign), and posted an impressive .893 OPS last season with the Dodgers. But Sal expects the dropoff to happen soon for Martinez, so he would stay far away.
"I would rather trade for Giancarlo Stanton," Sal said. "I do not want J.D. Martinez. He has got washed up written all over him. The second he signs with the Mets, he's going to go downhill.
"J.D. Martinez would be so bad, Mets fans would be begging for Daniel Vogelbach back."
