Sal: Mets don't have a real leader on the field, and it's hurting the team

The Mets are searching for answers after being swept by the Blue Jays and falling right back to .500 on the season, and Sal says the team desperately needs someone in the clubhouse to hold the group accountable.

The only problem? They don't have someone with that makeup.

"Last year, it worked with Buck taking over for the first year with this group and getting things in order…I think this year, they needed a leader on the field," Sal said. "I wish that guy would be Lindor, but I don't think it is. I believe Alonso thinks he's that guy, he's not that guy. I believe Brandon Nimmo has the ability, but I don't think everyone's gonna follow his lead. The Mets are lacking that type of lead guy."

Sal wants to see a player speak out when things aren't going well, rather than hearing the usual relentless optimism in interviews with reporters after tough losses like this past weekend. He has seen it before in his time as a Mets fan, but says a true leader on the field is a glaring omission from the 2023 squad, at least right now.

"Keith Hernandez was a great leader. He was a captain for a reason, and a great leader for a reason," Sal said. "The Mets don't have that."
