The Yankees drew heavy criticism when Anthony Rizzo landed on the IL, with many declaring the team overlooked clear signs of injury when Rizzo devolved into the worst hitter in baseball after a collision at first base way back in May.
But Boomer says there wasn’t much for the team to do after resting Rizzo a few days after the collision, putting him through all the possible tests, and listening to what the player was saying about how he was feeling. So, it’s hard to blame the club for continuing to pencil Rizzo into the lineup over the past two months.
“There were no complaints by Anthony Rizzo. He underwent all the testing required by the Players Association and the team,” Boomer said. “They took every precaution that is humanly possible to take. I guess you could say now, after watching the last six weeks of just how bad it has been, that maybe someone should have recognized it a little earlier.
“When he says he’s feeling good three and a half weeks ago and that he’s never looked better, he’s speaking in the moment.”
That sentiment from Rizzo changed before his placement on the IL, as he reported fogginess to the team during their series in Baltimore, though he continued to be put into the lineup days afterward. Still, Boomer says the Yankees medical staff is getting far too much criticism in this instance.
“Stop bitching about the Yankees medical,” Boomer said. “They’re one of the best in the league. This is New York. Rizzo has to be honest.”
