Clarke Schmidt named winner of Yankees' 2022 James P. Dawson Award

Clarke Schmidt has made the Yankees’ opening day roster, and he’ll head north coming off a Spring Training that the team's beat dubbed the best of any rookie-eligible player.

The Yankees announced Tuesday that Schmidt is the winner of the 2022 James P. Dawson Award, given annually to the most outstanding Yankees rookie in spring training as voted on by the team’s beat writers.

It is the second time he has won the award, which he also took home in 2020, and he will receive a watch courtesy of Betteridge Jewelers in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Schmidt made three appearances this spring, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out 11 in 9 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old, who was the Yankees’ first-round pick in 2017, has pitched 12 2/3 innings in the majors over the last two seasons, posting a 6.39 ERA in those frames.

Per the Yankees, the award was established in honor of James P. Dawson, who spent 45 years with the New York Post from 1908 (when he started as a copy boy at just 12 years old) until his death during spring training in 1953.

Norm Siebern was the first winner of the award back in 1956, and two winners have gone on to win the AL Rookie of the Year Award: Tony Kubek in 1957 and Tom Tresh in 1962.

Deivi Garcia won the award in 2021, and other recent notable winners include Miguel Andujar (2018), Gleyber Torres (2017), Masahiro Tanaka (2014), and Brett Gardner (2009). Don Mattingly, Willie Randolph, Jorge Posada, and Hideki Matsui are also among past winners.
