Anthony Rizzo is on the IL with concussion symptoms more than two months after his head collided with Fernando Tatis Jr.’s hip at first base, and Gio can’t figure out how the Yankees let that go unnoticed for so long.
“How bad of a medical staff do you have to be for this to go on?” Gio said. “This has been what, two and change months? This has gone undiagnosed, in this world of sports.”
Rizzo devolved into the worst hitter in baseball among qualified players since that collision, after posting All-Star numbers before the injury, making the lack of detection from the Yankees medical staff even more confounding, leading Gio to joke that other slumping Yankees may be harboring some obvious injuries that have gone unnoticed.
“Now I picture DJ LeMahieu walking around the clubhouse with a bone sticking out of his arm, going ‘I trace this back to April. Just thought it would get better, but now they tell me I have a broken arm,’” Gio said.
“Some Yankee trainer rubbing Bengay on his forehead,” Gio joked of the trainers treating Rizzo. “‘Here, take these Flinstones chewables.’”
