As the Yankees await news on Gerrit Cole’s elbow ailment, Keith says the season is as good as dead if the ace is done before the season begins.
Keith had already opined that the Yanks needed another big-time starter to add to the rotation, but if the reigning Cy Young winner is compromised, the once hyped season is spoiled.
“Cole is our 1A. They need a 1B if they’re thinking they’re going anywhere in October,” Keith said. “Without your 1A, and you don’t have a 1B, you’re not going anywhere.
“If Cole is done, the Yankees are done…let that reality sink in…Say your prayers, wear your pajamas inside out, do whatever you gotta do.”
Given the fact that there still hadn’t been news on Cole as of Wednesday morning, Keith said that worst-case scenario is feeling more and more likely.
“The fact that we didn’t get the actual news [Tuesday], it’s bad,” Keith said. “They’re doing damage control. They’re having their PR meetings and going ‘How do we tell the fanbase that Cole is not gonna be ready for Opening Day? How do we not tell them how long it’s gonna be so we can keep selling ticket packages?’”
