Sal isn’t happy that his Mets missed out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but he says it’s the Yankee fan that should wake up furious on Friday morning, as the Evil Empire’s return was just a farce.
“This makes the Yankees look awful. The Mets offered the most money like most people thought they would, they still didn’t get him because, clearly, Yamamoto didn’t want to be a Met. Guess what though? Yamamoto did want to be a Yankee, and the Yankees didn’t pony up,” Sal said on the new WFAN Daily. “Did the Yankees want him or not? This is more indicative of where the Yankees are at than the Mets. The Yankees didn’t offer the most money, didn’t even match the most money, for a player they reportedly wanted to go get. Are you in or are you out? As I predicted, the Yankees were in, but at their price.”
Sal said it seemed like the Yankees believed they were going to get Yamamoto, but banked on the Japanese star taking less money to don the pinstripes. It backfired, and now the Bombers are left with holes in the starting rotation beyond Gerrit Cole.
“They thought they were gonna land Yamamoto because of the power of the pinstripes…guess what? They were wrong, and the Yankees haven’t spent a cent in free agency,” Sal said.
“They’ve been cocky. They’ve been arrogant. They thought they had this guy for weeks…this is the Yankees we’re talking about! And they stopped at $300 million? I would be embarrassed as a Yankee fan.”
