UPDATE: Cortes has officially been placed on the IL with a rotator cuff strain, likely adding much more time to his estimated timeline to a return.

After the Yankees’ 3-2 loss to the White Sox on Tuesday, Aaron Boone confirmed to reporters that Aaron Judge would be going on the IL due to a toe injury that could keep the Yankee slugger out for “weeks.”

“He’s got a contusion and a sprain of the ligament,” Boone said. “He had a PRP shot…the biggest thing now is trying to get the swelling out of there. Now we’ll just see where we are in the coming weeks - or days - week, but the biggest thing is getting the swelling out of there now.

“Definitely could have been worse, but we feel like he’s gonna be alright. Just need some time now.”

Judge injured his toe crashing into the outfield fence at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night following a sparkling running catch, but now, he will be lost to the IL for the second time this season after putting up some of the best numbers in baseball in between.

“Any time you lose Aaron Judge for any amount of time going on the IL, you hope it’s a short one,” Boone said. “You don’t like that, but you also hopefully avoided something really serious.”

Judge will be joined on the IL by Nestor Cortes, who has been diagnosed with a shoulder strain and will be shut down for at least two weeks.

“Just a shoulder strain,” Cortes said. “Talked to the doctors today, got the shot, and it’s 15 days of no-throw. We hope it’s shorter, but we’re counting down 15 days.”
