Yankees call up Clarke Schmidt to start Sunday's Subway Series finale

Clarke Schmidt will officially be the starter for Sunday night’s Subway Series finale at Citi Field.

Following Saturday night’s win, the Yankees optioned infielder Andrew Velzaquez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and on Sunday, they recalled Schmidt from Triple-A.

Schmidt, the Yankees’ No. 5 prospect per MLB.com, got a late start this season due to an elbow injury, but has a 2.96 ERA in 27 1/3 innings across four levels this season as he works his way back.

Prior to Saturday’s game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the TBD for Sunday “could be Clarke Schmidt, could be Andrew Heaney, could be a combination. We'll get through tonight and make that call for tomorrow."

The Yankees used Lucas Luetge, Chad Green, Clay Holmes, Albert Abreu, and Aroldis Chapman behind Jordan Montgomery Saturday, and Abreu (pitched two days in a row) and Michael King (45 pitches Friday) are likely to be unavailable, so Schmidt to Heaney could the plan.
