You didn’t have to be watching Thursday night’s Yankee game to know things weren’t going well.
All you had to do was open Twitter and see that Frankie Montas was trending along with Sonny Gray.
That’s right, in his third start as a Yankee and first in the Bronx, New York’s big trade acquisition is already being compared to the last failed pitching acquisition to come from the A’s, as Gray struggled badly for the Yankees after being acquired before the deadline in 2017.
Gray was an All-Star in 2015 before being dealt to New York, but in his first full Yankee season, he pitched to a 4.90 ERA, and was dealt to the Reds afterward. He immediately turned himself into an All-Star again in 2019, and has pitched to a respectable 3.41 ERA since leaving the Bronx, including a 3.11 ERA with the Twins across 18 starts this season.
As for Montas, he is off to one of the worst starts to his Yankee tenure since Jaret Wright in 2005, allowing 14 runs in 14 innings after giving up six in Thursday’s loss.
Already drawing comparisons so Gray during just his third start tells you all you need to know about how Montas’ Yankee tenure is going so far.
