Twins baseball returns to Target Field on Friday. But fans seeking a different kind of high will have to find another option for the time being.
Despite being popular outside the ballpark, Twins fans once again won't find any THC offerings inside Target Field this year.
Peter Spike, general manager with Delaware North who run all the concessions at Target Field, says they're still reviewing ways to one-day offer those types of products inside the ballpark. They are legal, at least for now, in Minnesota.
"Because if it does continue to stay on trend and there is a demand, we want to be able to offer that to our fans," says Spike. "That being said, there are some discussions still going on, what is the right way to do it, the responsible way to do it. So that we make sure that if we do go down that path that we're doing it for the right reasons and we're going to be responsible to our guests."
Chicago's United Center began selling 5mg THC-infused drinks earlier this year, and the Portland Pickles (minor league baseball) became the first team to legally sell hemp-derived THC seltzers at their games in June 2024. But despite THC beverages being currently available in all 50 states to varying degrees, few if any ballparks or sports arenas have started selling them.
And it may never reach the ballpark stands either. Hemp-derived beverages do face an uncertain future due to a new bill passed by Congress last year that could cap the amount of THC in them, effectively banning the entire industry.
Of course there are plenty of new foods and drinks to try this year, including a number of beverages beyond the traditional beer and hot dog - which of course are available all over the ballpark.
Spike says they're adjusting to new trends, including a decline in the amount of people choosing to drink less beer, or shunning alcohol all-together.
"In an event-driven business like ourselves, we do see some of that moving into more canned cocktails," Spike explains. "Someone that's looking not for a malt-based cocktail necessarily. There is certainly an audience for that, but they're looking for something that is more spirit-based.
Target Field also offers a variety of mocktails and N/A drinks too.
