First they announce new uniforms. Then they announce a trade.
The Minnesota Twins have acquired right-handed pitcher Alejandro Hidalgo from the Los Angeles Angels, in exchange for infielder Gio Urshela.
Hidalgo, just 19-years old, spent the 2022 season with Low-A Inland Empire in the California League, going 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 10 starts for the 66ers. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound righty is currently ranked as the 22nd-best prospect in the Angels organization, per MLB.com.
It’s the second consecutive year Gio Urshela is moved in a trade. The 31-year old came to the Twins from New York in the Josh Donaldson trade. Urshela played in 144 games for the Twins last season, hitting .285 with 13 home runs, 64 RBI and 61 runs scored.
Last offseason, the Yankees traded Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for third baseman Josh Donaldson, shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and catcher Ben Rortvedt.
In making the move, the Twins add another young arm to the minor league staff, something that is missing across the organization. Pitching really let down the 2022 club with starters unable to go late into games, and the bullpen unable to fill those gaps.
