19-year old Vanessa Lopez pleads guilty to killing boyfriend while drunk

A 19-year old St. Paul woman is facing up to 20 years in prison for shooting and killing her boyfriend.

Vanessa Lopez pleaded guilty to killing Manuel Jurado of South St. Paul at a home in Chanhassen last February. Investigators say the then 18-year old Lopez was drunk when she shot Jurado in the head as they sat in a parked car.

Investigators say they two had been arguing over their relationship. Lopez telling police she didn't know the gun was loaded when she fired it.

She addressed the court at her sentencing in Carver County District Court.

"When I first came in, I was lost girl, intoxicated girl, someone who had alcohol control her life," says Lopez. "And because of those decisions, I unintentionally took the life of someone. Someone I loved."

Lopez is eligible for supervised release after she serves 13 years of her 20-year sentence.
