St. Paul police have released body cam video of their interaction last weekend with a fugitive suspected in a double homicide and armed carjacking.
Police were preparing to arrest Mychal Stowers near a West 7th Street laundromat last Saturday, when BCA investigators say Stowers pointed a gun at officers.
St. Paul police shot him. Stowers died later at Regions Hospital.
“We are committed to the sanctity of the independent investigation; we are also committed to the transparency of our actions," said St. Paul Police Chief Axel Henry. “That’s why we are releasing the body-worn camera and in car camera footage from this incident. No one wants apprehensions to result in the use of force of any kind. Not using force is always our goal—and is the outcome of the majority of our officers’ interactions. We grieve with the families impacted, our community, and our officers. We hope that with working together as a community, we can prevent these outcomes in the future.”
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently conducting the investigation into the shooting. The shooting came after a nationwide warrant was issued for the arrest of 36-year-old Mychal Stowers.
He had been at large for two weeks in connection with the shooting death of his pregnant ex-wife before carjacking a car and shooting a second person.
