Alex Roberts, the man behind Brasa and Alma, located in the Twin Cities, is continuing to make a splash in the restaurant industry after decades of work and innovation.

Roberts joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Jason DeRusha for this week’s episode of “DeRusha Eats.”

Alma has now been open for 24 years, and Roberts shared that in his two-plus decades of running the restaurant, he wouldn’t have been able to remain where he is without those who have supported him.

“I know that Alma is a unique place,” Roberts said.

While other fine dining restaurants in the Twin Cities may have a clientele of a certain spending level, Roberts acknowledged that those who support his business do not entirely fall into the luxury category.

“I know a person that’s a public school teacher, and they come once a year for their birthday, every year…. I really love that we get both the high spend, luxury car, spending level of people that can do it at will and then people who can come once a year and everything in between,” Roberts shared.

Despite the praise that his restaurants have received, which he describes as serving a different take on fine dining with more of a “rustic” presentation, Roberts isn’t letting any praise get in the way of what he wants to do.

Even with the Star Tribune and other critics giving his restaurants four stars, Roberts feels as though it isn’t justified compared to the level of fine dining required for four stars.

“In my mind, that’s very generous, and we appreciate that, but to me, it doesn’t create the right expectation,” Roberts says.

Now, Roberts is looking to replicate his success once more, as he looks to open a new restaurant in downtown Hopkins.

The new Brasa location will continue its fast-casual style and offer the same food that Roberts has built his reputation on.

The new location is under construction and will open at 1728 Mainstreet in Hopkins. If everything goes as planned, the doors will open this fall.
