It's been awhile since Minnesota got a new area code, but that's about to change. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission announcing 924 is coming to southern Minnesota.

"We’re running out of numbers,” says Consumer Affairs Supervisor Anne Thom. “It comes down to it being that simple. The demand for numbers on the telecom side and then on the wireless connection side is overwhelming and we need a new area code.”

Thom is referring to the 507 area code, which will run out of numbers in 2025. Thom says everyone with a current 507 number will be able to keep it.

“The new 924 area code will simply be assigned to new numbers coming up within the current 507 area code,” Thom explains.

New customers, or those requesting additional phone lines may be assigned the 924 area code once it's activated sometime next year.

Phone numbers in Minnesota, and throughout the United States, are governed by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA). NANPA forecasted a need for 507 area code relief in August 2022. The PUC opened a comment period and held a public meeting in December 2022.
