Groundbreaking is Monday north of downtown Minneapolis for an 8,000 seat concert venue.
Minneapolis city and community leaders will turn the first shovels of dirt at 11:00 Monday morning at the riverfront site off Dowling Avenue North and Interstate 94.
The Upper Harbor Amphitheater project has been discussed for more than a decade.
The 53-acre site along the Mississippi is expected to open next summer, and plans are for the amphitheater to host fifty ticketed events a year.
The venue is a joint venture between First Avenue and the Minnesota Orchestra.
The amphitheater is expected to open in 2027. It will also include a 20-acre riverfront park, affordable rental and ownership housing for current residents, 300 living wage jobs, and a Health and Wellness Hub.
Upper Harbor Terminal is a former industrial site located along the west bank of the Mississippi River in North Minneapolis. The City of Minneapolis owns the site.
According to the city, the Upper Harbor redevelopment will:
- Achieve equitable development principles
- Include a first-class regional park
- Offer a significant riverfront-oriented destination
- Provide high quality, community-benefiting private development
- Reflect the history of the site
- Incorporate high-quality design
- Showcase "green", sustainable approaches and features
- Feel unique to this specific place
