Authorities are investigating the death of a man who was reportedly pummeled by a wave on the shore of Lake Superior and swept out into the lake.

It happened Tuesday afternoon near Lutsen, Minnesota along the lake's North Shore.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office says the 61-year old was found unresponsive about 100 feet from shore.

According to WTIP In Grand Marais, Cook County Search and Rescue were unable to reach the body due to difficult conditions on the lake which can become suddenly and notoriusly rough.

United States Border Patrol launched a boat from the Grand Marais harbor and were able to recover the man who's name has not been released.

The sheriff’s office said that the victim and a female were sitting on the shore of Lake Superior near Solbakken Resort. The female left the 61-year-old on the shore prior to him getting swept out into the lake.
