Minneapolis city leaders announcing a significant drop in violent crime on the city's north side.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Brian O'Hara will discuss details later Thursday, but are initially saying the number of shooting victims in North Minneapolis decreased by 20% in 2024, and so far is down 30% in 2025.

"The progress we've seen in North Minneapolis is the result of our commitment to proactive policing and strong partnerships, both with the community and with local, state, and federal agencies," said Mayor Frey. "We’ve made significant strides in reducing gun violence, but we’re not there yet. Our efforts will continue until every resident of Minneapolis feels safe in their community."

Overall, gun calls to police were down last year, and so far in 2025 homicides, assaults, and burglaries are all down. In fact, the number of incidents dropped to their lowest point since 2014.

City leaders credit things like proactive policing and cooperation with community groups, and better and more focused community engagement as the MPD works to rebuild its staffing levels.

Chief O'Hara says they're making "real progress," and it's encouraging to hear residents feel safer. However, O'Hara notes that their work isn't done.

“I want to commend everyone involved for the hard work they are doing to bring a sense of security back to this neighborhood,” said Community Safety Commissioner Toddrick Barnette. “This is an example of the community safety ecosystem in action – where collaboration and the coordination of resources leads to a safer Minneapolis.”

O'Hara added that year-to-date, crime is down across most major categories in all areas of the city including reductions in robberies, carjackings, and auto thefts.

Key data from the Fourth Precinct - which covers North Minneapolis - include:

Shooting victims:

In 2024, gunshot wound victims were at their lowest levels since 2014, with 132 victims reported.

This is a decrease of nearly 21%—35 fewer victims—from 2023 and within pre-pandemic levels.

Gunshot incidents decreased 25%, with 38 fewer incidents compared to the previous year.

ShotSpotter and gun-crime calls:

ShotSpotter activations were down 16%, with nearly 500 fewer activations in 2024.

The number of rounds detected by ShotSpotter dropped 13%, with nearly 1,500 fewer rounds being fired.

Fully automatic gunfire dropped 28%, or 64 fewer incidents.

The overall "Gun Crime Index," which tracks gun-related calls, dropped 14%—that includes shooting calls, ShotSpotter activations, and other calls about gun violence.
