Following the announcement that Minnesota’s budget surplus has nearly doubled to an astounding $17.6 billion, Republican members of the state legislature are speaking out about what it means for Minnesotans.

Office of Management and Budget Commissioner Jim Schowalter says part of the surplus includes the $9.3 million left on the table at the end of the last legislative session when lawmakers could not come to an agreement on how to spend it on things ranging from tax cuts to spending on education and public safety.

On the Republican side of the aisle, House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth called the news of the surplus "jaw-dropping," saying that Minnesotans are overtaxed.

With inflation forcing those in the state to have to pay more for rent, gas, groceries, energy bills, and more, Demuth says that Minnesotans deserve to get their money back.

“I look forward to the next session, balancing out our revenues, so we aren’t taking so much from the families,” Demuth said.

Demuth says Republicans will work with their political counterparts on meaningful tax cuts like social security, as well as tax reductions for middle-income families.

“I can tell you... my Caucasus believes that tax hikes should be completely off the table,” Demuth said.
