Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in Hastings today as the city prepares for flooding along the Mississippi River.
“It’s spring, we understand water in Minnesota,” Walz said. “I think the biggest and first thing is, we need to keep people safe. We need to do the best we can to protect personal and public property.”
Walz says flooding will be spread out across the state, with the south getting hit well before the north.
“This event is going to unfold across Minnesota, as I said here in the southern part of the state,” says Walz. “Probably over the next week to ten days. In the northern part of the state we may be a month away from the crest.”
A $40 million emergency aid bill passed by the Legislature is intended to help cities with extensive flood damage.
There are currently a number of river flood warnings that have been issues by the National Weather Service including for the Mississippi River in Anoka and in Hastings, and the St. Croix River near Stillwater along with numerous smaller rivers across southern Minnesota.
Southern half of the state is already dealing with rising rivers while the northern part could be a month away still
