You already know it, but this pothole season is already a bad one in Minnesota

There's a good chance you've already noticed - we're in a doozy of a pothole season Minnesota.

For most, a jarring bump or two or three. For others, a bill into the hundreds of dollars at the auto repair shop.

Either way, they're early, thanks in part to climate change.

"For a typical winter, I would say yes, it's early," says City of Minneapolis Director of Transportation, Maintenance and Repair Joe Paumen. "I'm just not sure we have typical winters anymore. And so, you know we are seeing three out of the last four winters I think, we have seen a lot of freeze thaw cycles during times of the year that might normally be considered our coldest times."

Paumen says they're working as best they can to temporarily fill potholes right now, with a more permanent hot mix patch coming in the spring.

It has gotten significantly worse over the past several weeks with some cold stretches and warm stretches causing havoc on the roads.

Paumen says they're doing the best they can to keep up.

"The reporting of potholes by our residents is very helpful," he says. "We are also out right now trying to put together maps of some of our more troubled spots in preparation to both patch them right now, and to be prepared for when the hot mix plants open in the spring."

Minneapolis residents can report potholes on the city's website or by dialing 311.
