An historic day in Minnesota, as Governor Tim Walz (D) signs the PRO Act into law, guaranteeing a woman's right to an abortion in the state.

Democrats worked quickly to pass the Protect Reproductive Options Act in the House and the Senate this month as a way to further solidify abortion rights already protected through a 1995 Minnesota Supreme Court decision known as Doe v. Gomez.

Governor Tim Walz spoke about guaranteeing the freedom to get an abortion in Minnesota before signing it.

“And the message that we're sending to Minnesota today is very clear,” Walz says. “Your rights are protected in this state, you have the right to make your own decisions about your health, your family and your life.”

Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan brought her young daughter and niece to the signing ceremony to witness what she called “history” for Minnesota.

“This victory is for indigenous women, for native women, for black women, for our LGBTQ+ neighbors and relatives, for low income folks, for people who live in rural communities and for everyone who has fought for sovereignty of their own bodies,” said Flanagan.

Republicans have voiced concerns about the bill not setting limits on when an abortion can be performed.
