McDermott: Coaching this year's Bills team a 'true joy'

Bills head coach Sean McDermott addressed the media after his team's 23-19 win over the Buccaneers in their preseason finale

Tampa, Fla. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills wrapped up the 2025 preseason schedule on Saturday with a bounce-back win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 23-19.

After being shut out by the Chicago Bears last week, Bills head coach Sean McDermott was pleased with his team's overall response just six days later in Tampa Bay.

The performance of many depth players on the roster may end up helping their odds of making the 53-man active roster once roster cuts are announced on Tuesday.

"Just fun to watch these guys go play and lay it on the line," said McDermott following the win with the media. "We’ve got tough decisions to make. I want for all these guys to play in the league. It’s been fun to coach them and a real joy.”

One player who did flash on Saturday night was fourth-round rookie defensive tackle Deone Walker, who registered his first sack of the preseason. McDermott was quick to point out Walker as someone he wanted more from after last week's performance.

McDermott will be looking to lean on some of the young talent like Walker over the course of the upcoming regular season in Buffalo.

"We’re gonna have to count on these young players, and there are going to be some moments where it’s two steps forward, one step back," McDermott said. "With that, when they take that step back, we have to get them back as quickly as we can to the two steps forward. That’s physically, mentally, the whole way."
