One of the most underrated parts of the Patriots offense this season is the influence of new quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch.
The 44-year-old has a ton of experience both in the college and professional game, most recently with the Rams, and will bring some new ideas and concepts to the Patriots offense. He and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will work very closely this year.
Speaking via video conference Friday, Fisch detailed what he can bring to the team.
"I think what we've been able to do is have great conversations and be able to talk about not just what we're doing but why we're doing it, how we're doing it and continue to just build off of the great fundamentals and foundation that's here," he said. "And then what we're able to do and how we're able to come up with some thoughts and working off of different systems that I've been apart of and other coaches on our staff have been a part of. I think we can continue to just grow.
"I think the thing New England has been known for is their ability to adjust. You can go into a game one week and get one personnel group and one philosophy and then two weeks later, you play them when they're playing something totally different. I can tell you from experience going against New England that really what you needed to be ready for is anything because their philosophy has always been we're going to do what it takes to win the game.
"So, just bringing another voice, being able to have another opinion and really kind of learning from what they've done. Maybe there's one or two things that we can add to it but really just looking forward to helping Josh in whatever way possible."
Fisch has been with the organization since the NFL combine, so he and McDaniels have already collaborated a great deal.
"Yeah, I actually -- so way back when, my last game as a graduate assistant at University of Florida was Josh's last game as a graduate assistant at Michigan State and we played one another in the Citrus Bowl," Fisch said. "And so I've known Josh since 2000. And then we both got in the NFL the same year. We both started on the defensive side of the ball. I was a defensive quality control coach for three years for the Houston Texans for Vic Fangio and Dom Capers. He was a defensive QC here.
"We met probably almost annually at different times at the combine or at the Senior Bowl or we had a couple symposiums we were at together. So I've known Josh for 20 years. And I've always wanted the opportunity to work for Josh. And I was in Denver the year before he arrived. I was in Mike on that staff. And it didn't work out then, but it's worked out now. I've loved every day since being here working with Josh."
McDaniels and Fisch will certainly have the ability to get creative this year with whoever is at quarterback.
