Will Mac Jones start this season?
This is one of the biggest questions as it relates to the Patriots for the 2021 season. Jones obviously is the Patriots' quarterback of the future, but with Cam Newton on the roster there will be some competition over the summer and perhaps into the regular season.
Jones had an impressive spring with everything the coaching staff threw at him, but it was just OTAs and minicamp so there were no pads and most drills were not full speed. It will be interesting to see how he reacts later this month when the pads come on and the intensity picks up.
Relating to the question, it seems very likely Jones will start at some point this season. Will he be ready to start Week 1 is a different question, but as long as he continues to progress like he did this spring, it seems like he will be ready to start a game at some point during the year.
Having Newton on the roster means there's no reason to rush the rookie. Jones can go at his own pace and the team can make sure he's fully comfortable before throwing him into the fire.
Looking at the schedule, Week 5 could be a good time to turn things over to the rookie. It comes after the Week 4 game against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers and comes at a soft part of the schedule with a game at Houston, home against Dallas and home against the Jets Weeks 5-7.
Jones will start this season, the real question is when.
