Patriots reportedly add on offense, sign OL Wes Schweitzer

After a week of spending big money on their defense, the Patriots have reportedly made an addition on the offensive side of the football.

On Friday, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero posted on X.com that the Patriots are signing former Jets offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer to a one-year deal.

In eight seasons in the NFL, Schweitzer has 62 career starts, spending time at both guard spots as well as center.

He’s played for three different teams, spending three seasons with the Falcons (2017-19), three seasons with the Commanders (2020-22) and the last two seasons with New York (2023-24).

Schweitzer’s positional versatility will be a bonus for a Patriots team in need of improvement on the offensive line across the board, as that unit struggled mightily throughout the 2024 season. And with the team announcing the release of longtime starting center David Andrews on Thursday, Schweitzer immediately becomes a candidate to help fill that void in the middle of the offensive line for the 2025 season.

With that said, expectations for Schweitzer’s impact on the offense should be tempered, as the 31-year-old sixth round pick out of San Jose State isn’t exactly among the elite names remaining on the offensive line market.

In signing with New England, Schweitzer joins another former Jets offensive lineman in right tackle Morgan Moses, who signed with the Patriots shortly after the “legal tampering” period opened on Monday and was officially introduced in a press conference on Thursday.

Schweitzer becomes yet another player signing in New England this offseason with a previous connection to someone on the Patriots’ new-look coaching staff:

- Both Schweitzer and Moses played on an offense in New York the last two seasons that included new Patriots wide receiver coach Todd Downing as a member of its staff

- Linebacker Harold Landry was drafted by head coach Mike Vrabel in Tennessee back in 2018, and played for him until Vrabel was fired by the Titans after the 2023 season

- Linebacker Robert Spillane was signed as an undrafted free agent by head coach Mike Vrabel in Tennessee during the 2018 season, giving the rookie his first shot at NFL football

- Quarterback Josh Dobbs played under Vrabel during the 2022 season in Tennessee

- Cornerback Carlton Davis III played on a Detroit Lions defense in 2024 that included Patriots defensive coordinator Terrell Williams as a member of its staff

- Wide receiver Mack Hollins played one season for Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels while the latter was head coach of the Raiders in 2022
