Bills playoff scenarios coming into focus

With Saturday’s loss to the New England Patriots in Foxboro, the Buffalo Bills have clinched the fifth seed in the upcoming AFC Playoffs.

They can’t go up or down, which means they’ll be on the road for the Wild Card round and play either Saturday, Jan. 4 or Sunday, Jan. 5. They’d also be guaranteed to be on the road again if they were to win in the first round.

The only way the Bills could host a playoff game is if they make it to the AFC Championship Game and the sixth seed does, as well. The sixth seed has yet to be determined, and so is the fourth seed, who will be the Bills' opening round opponent.

Here's the playoff scenario for the Bills, as far as who they may play in the first round. There are only two possible opponents, the Houston Texans or the Kansas City Chiefs:

The Bills will play in Houston, unless the following happens:

  • The Chiefs lose next week and the Texans win next week.

In that case, they would open up the playoffs in Kansas City.

The Chiefs play next week at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Texans play next week at home against the Tennessee Titans, who need to win to make the playoffs.
