Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The accolades for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen continue to pile up in, what has already been, an MVP-caliber season.
For the second time this season and the 14th time in his NFL career, Allen has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week. This time following his historic performance this past Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
While Allen's stats from Sunday night's contest weren't eye-popping, completing 13-of-17 passes for 148 yards, he accomplished a feat no other quarterback has been able to achieve in NFL history: Throw, at least, one touchdown, run for a touchdown and also catch a touchdown pass in a single game.
Overall, Allen became the fifth player in NFL history to achieve such a feat in one game.
One of the plays of the season for Allen and the NFL came in the third quarter when with less than six minutes remaining on the clock and facing a 1st-and-goal at the 49ers' 7-yard line, Allen fired a quick, short pass to his left to wideout Amari Cooper. With Cooper wrapped up and not gaining anymore ground, he found a way to lateral the ball back to Allen, who took off for the pylon to give the Bills a 28-3 lead.
The play counted not only as a passing touchdown for Allen, but also a receiving touchdown, despite him never actually receiving credit for a reception.
In addition, Allen also became the Bills' all-time leader in total touchdowns (248) in the win, passing Hall-of-Famer Jim Kelly (244) with a second quarter touchdown pass to wide receiver Mack Hollins.
With the win, Allen and the Bills secured their fifth-straight AFC East title and, at least, one home playoff game. This also marks the first time in franchise history the Bills have won the division in five-straight seasons.
This is the seventh time a member of the Bills has been named an AFC Player of the Week by the NFL. The 27-year-old Allen was already named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his Week 3 performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Other Bills players to earn league honors this season as AFC Player of the Week includes:
- Week 1: Greg Rousseau - AFC Defensive Player of the Week
- Week 2: James Cook - AFC Offensive Player of the Week
- Week 9: Tyler Bass - AFC Special Teams Player of the Week
- Week 10: Taron Johnson - AFC Defensive Player of the Week
- Week 11: Terrel Bernard - AFC Defensive Player of the Week
Allen was also named the AFC Player of the Month of September earlier this season.
