Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills have a little less than three weeks to prepare for the 2025 regular season opener on "Sunday Night Football" against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 7.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen is still getting used to all the new wide receivers he has, and it’s been made a little more difficult because he hasn’t played in either preseason game.
This is the final week of, what’s considered, training camp, and Allen says he and his teammates are taking full advantage.
"It’s a chance to catch the football. I know we’re getting close to the end here, but our guys are working extremely hard," said Allen on Tuesday after practice in Orchard Park.
Allen says he still has a lot to work on, because many things go into where he places a ball for each receiver.
"The ability to change arm slot, to change ball positioning, some guys are faster, some guys are slower, some guys are bigger, some guys are smaller, and we’re asking them to run the same routes," Allen said. "If you’ve got a 6-foot-4 guy running the same route as a 5-foot-10 guy, the ball is going to be a little bit different. So it’s all reactionary stuff, and I think it’s a good thing."
Allen has been talking all camp about things on tape that he’s seen from last year that he hasn’t liked at all.
"There’s still things on film that I’m like, ‘What was I thinking here? Why am I looking left when I know I should be looking right?’ And a lot of freebies that could’ve been last year that we didn’t take advantage of that. Hopefully we can this year," he said.
Allen will always be asked who he might be comfortable having with him in the quarterback room. He has always spoken highly of this year’s group, which includes Mitch Trubisky, Mike White and Shane Buechele.
"I think our quarterbacks room, as a whole, is one of the best in the league, if not the best in the league," Allen said. "They’re great human beings, guys that love football, guys that love the comradery of being on a football team."
Allen feels Buechele is no different from the group, even though he's the fourth quarterback on the depth chart.
"The knowledge he has of the game too is very beneficial to me. The way he sees the game is very similar to the way I see the game, able to bounce ideas back-and-forth," Allen added.
There has been talk of former Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis coming to Orchard Park for a free agent visit on Wednesday. Allen had some success with a receiver who was very up and down in his time in Buffalo. Allen says he’s excited to see him, because they’ve stayed in touch.
"I love Gabe, and I’m sure I’ll see him over the next day or two," he said. "He was awesome when he was here, and he’s getting back to full health here soon. So who knows. We’ll see."
There’s only one more preseason game this year, and it comes Saturday in Tampa Bay against the Buccaneers. We don’t know if Allen will play yet, but he’s not at all concerned about the pasting the Bills took on Sunday night in a 38-0 loss to the Bears in Chicago.
"You take it with a grain of salt. Watching the film, it’s never as bad as or as good as you think it is," Allen noted.
“We don’t game plan much in the preseason. We just ask that guys go out there and put their best stuff on the field. I don’t know if we did that as a whole unit, but that’s why we play the preseason, and are doing joint practices to try different things to figure out what guys can or can’t do.
"At the end of the day, it’s the preseason. I’m sure a lot of people are making a big deal out of it, but we’re using it as an opportunity to get better."
The Bills have two more practices and a walk-through in Orchard Park before heading to Tampa.
