New Britain, Conn./WTIC Radio - New Haven's former police chief has been arrested for allegedly stealing from a fund used to pay confidential informants to help solve crimes.

Karl Jacobson turned himself in Friday to state police.

He's facing two counts of first degree larceny.

Jacobson last month admitted to taking money from the fund for personal use.

However, prosecutors say the former chief was responsible for a total of $85,000 missing from two accounts.

Investigators say $81,500 from the confidential informant fund was unaccounted for.

And, further investigation found that Jacobson had allegedly deposited checks totaling $4,000 into his person checking account from the New Haven Police Activity League fund had

Jacobson retired last month upon news of the missing funds after three of his assistants confronted him.

He is free on $150,000 bond.

Just this week, Mayor Justin Elicker and acting Police Chief David Zanelli announced changes in oversight to the fund and that, after a suspension, it would start up again in the next few weeks.
