SUFFIELD, CONN (WTIC Radio)-Following an incident Saturday night where one of their own was critically injured, correctional officers at MacDougall-Walker are calling on the administration to provide more safety measures.
The guard was punched in the face and knocked unconscious by an intoxicated inmate. Other guards said he fell to the concrete floor, unconscious in a pool of blood before being hospitalized. The inmate also received treatment.
Union members say when these instances occur, the facility should be locked down so all the parties can decompress.
The guards also said they're placed at a disadvantage and are outnumbered because of a new law offering inmates more out-of-cell time.
The Department of Correction said the inmate struck two officers and tried to assault a third. According to the department, the guard suffered a bloody lip and has since returned to work. Further it said the facility was in lockdown and resumed normal operations today.
The assaulting inmate and two others have been removed from the unit and placed in restrictive housing, according to a spokesperson.
