Box Truck Driver Wanted In Hit-And-Run Death Of Roads Worker On I-94

(WWJ) Michigan State Police troopers are continuing to canvass a Macomb County neighborhood, after a roads worker was hit and killed along I-94 in St. Clair Shores.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel said 26-year-old Zach Morisette of Chesterfield Township, who worked for the Macomb County Department of Roads, was patching the shoulder of the freeway, Monday afternoon.

"It's the thing we worry most about when they're out their on the road," Hackel said. "Zach Morisette, young worker, been with us only six months, had his life taken while out there doing a road construction project."

The driver who hit him fled the scene, according to police.

A day later, investigators have an idea of the type of vehicle they are looking for.

"Apparently it was a white box truck," Hackel said Tuesday. "In and around that area at 3 p.m., it was eastbound I-94 just south of 9 Mile Rd., which is technically is kinda heading northbound, and on the right-hand shoulder of the road."

Hackel, who called it a "tragic" incident, urges anyone who may have witnessed the incident or knows who was responsible to contact MSP at 313-237-2450.

"We know right now that the Michigan State Police are investigating this as a crime scene, technically, since it was a hit-and-run," Hackel said. "And so they're looking for information, any support that the public may give them. They are getting some tips, but again they are looking for more information."

Investigators are also are also attending Morisette's autopsy, hoping to uncover further evidence in the case.

Hackel said Morisette's death is the first involving a worker on a state road or highway this year.
