(WWJ) The heat wave we're are feeling is causing some problems underground, too.
In Detroit, Water and Sewerage Department Director Gary Brown says his crews are swamped, as the old pipes just can't take the heat.
"We've had 84 water main breaks in the City of Detroit over the last ten days; we're addressing them all," Brown told WWJ 's Vickie Thomas on Tuesday.
There typically are a lot of water main breaks in the city during the summer months, although this is a lot all at once.
On Tuesday, a DWSD crew was working to pinpoint a water main break in Palmer Park neighborhood; the third break in the last couple of days.
The latest break knocked out water service to some of apartment buildings on the south side of the park. Thomas reported that while service to the apartments has been restored, the Detroit Police Department's Twelfth Precinct remained without service early Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say the problem is aging pipes, coupled with the heat.
More breaks are expected, according to the DWSD, and city contractors have been put on notice to send more workers.
"We're going to try to get through the next couple of days of 90-degree-plus on notice to add capacity, so we can get more help in to get them done quicker," Brown added. "We're just asking people to be patient. We're on top of it."
