DETROIT (WWJ) -- An undercover Detroit police officer is recovering at the hospital after his car was slammed into by a murder suspect on Detroit's east side Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to extricate the officer from his vehicle and he was listed in temporary serious condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

A spokesman for the police department says uniformed officers located a suspect wanted for murder and tried to attempt a traffic stop, but the suspect fled the scene and a chase ensued. At some point during the chase, the suspect's vehicle t-boned the undercover officer's unmarked car in the area of Pennsylvania and Shoemaker, near I-94 and Gratiot.

The officer, a 20-year veteran of the department, was rescued from his car and taken to the hospital. The suspect, meanwhile, was taken into custody. Authorities have not disclosed details of the murder the suspect was wanted for. The names of the suspect and victim have not been released.

"The officer received some injuries, but the good news is, it looks like he's going to be OK. Right now it's negative for any broken bones or anything," officials said.
