MONROE (WWJ) - Authorities are trying to identify the person who dumped several sick German Shepherd puppies along the side of I-275.

The Lucas County Pit Crew, based in Toledo, picked up the puppies on Thursday after getting multiple tips that they were abandoned along the freeway at Telegraph Road in Monroe County. Witnesses say as many as five pups may have been abandoned, but volunteers were only able to locate two.

The Monroe County Animal Shelter says the puppies, named Monroe and Newport, were infected with the Parvo virus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness. Both were undergoing treatment but unfortunately, Monroe did not survive.

Authorities say there is a strong possibility more puppies could be in the area. If you find a puppy, report it immediately, keep it safe, and do not bring it around your family dog.

Anyone with information about who may have dumped the puppies should call Monroe County Animal Shelter at 734-240-3125.
