High wave action, strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions are expected at Lake Michigan beaches south of Grand Haven today, according to the National Weather Service.
A Beach Hazards Statement has ben issued for Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening for Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties (See map below for affected beach areas).
While the lakeshore was fairly calm in the morning hours, the NWS says large waves will build on Lake Michigan this afternoon and last through tonight.
Strong rip currents and strong structural currents are expected, the NWS said, warning that waves will build to 3 to 5 feet by as winds of 10 to 20 mph become more northerly.
The NWS says these conditions will pose a danger to swimmers and anyone walking on piers, as well as those operating smaller boats.
High waves can sweep people off piers, which may be heavily swamped by waves. Strong currents will also develop, can pull swimmers into deeper water.
The public is strongly urged to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions, and do not venture out on piers.
Holland State Park and South Haven North Beach may be especially dangerous near the pier, officials said.
"We see drownings all the time in the Great Lakes with waves like those expected today. North sides of piers especially dangerous," NWS Grand Rapids noted.
The public is urged to check with local authorities on potential beach closures before heading out.
