(WWJ) Warren's Police Commissioner is planning to ask federal authorities to get involved in a double-murder investigation so the death penalty could come into play.
Warren police are working overtime, searching for the suspect or suspects responsible for the "execution style" killings of a 6-year-old boy and 28-year-old woman in the basement of a home on Otis Avenue near 9 Mile Rd. and Dequindre.
Police said the killings on Thursday are connected to the murder of a man on Hyde Park Dr. in Detroit earlier that morning.
The 31-year-old man, found dead in a burned out car, was the father of the murdered boy, Commissioner Bill Dwyer said. The woman and child were found fatally shot when police conducted a welfare check at the man's home.
"The execution style killing of the 6-year-old boy is truly evil, unthinkable and senseless, and shows no regard for life," Dwyer told reporters at a news conference Friday. "Only monsters or godless creatures would pull the trigger on a 6-year-old and execute a child."
Dwyer said police executed search warrants and have recovered some evidence. Investigators have also obtained security video from the area and are using that in an attempt to find those involved.
As for as a motive, Dwyer said preliminary information indicates the deaths may be drug-related.
"We are interviewing family members, friend and known associates of the victims. The Detroit Police Department is processing the car and scene in Detroit, and we are also planning on including federal law enforcement to assist us in the investigation," Dwyer said. "At this time right now the Warren Police Department has two squads of detectives working around the clock on the investigation."
"If we bring the federal authorities in we may be asking for the death penalty for the person or persons responsible," Dwyer added.
Currently, the Warren PD is working together with the Detroit PD on the case.
"It's a horrific murder," said Cmdr. Eric Decker, of the DPD Major Crimes unit.
He asked the public to pleace come forward with any information. "We definitely need help from everybody out there to close it and bring these people to justice," Decker said.
Police are not releasing the victims' names at this time.
