DETROIT (WWJ) - One child is dead and three other people are injured after a vehicle caught fire early Saturday morning on Detroit's eastside.

Officials with the Detroit Police Department said cops happened across a car on fire in the 2600 block of East Canfield shortly after midnight on May 14.

The officers were able to pull three occupants as well as a 10-year-old child from the flames and provided medical assistance.

Authorities said the 10-year-old succumbed to their injuries and died.

One of the people pulled from the car is listed in critical condition while the other two are in stable condition, police confirmed.

It was discovered that officers had earlier attempted to stop the same vehicle due to erratic driving; DPD said the traffic stop was terminated "out of concern for public safety."

DPD suspects speed was a possible factor in the incident, but the investigation remains ongoing; officials did not release the name of the victims and no other information was made available.
