DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two people were arrested, and several others were detained for questioning following a situation involving a gunman in a west side Detroit neighborhood.

Neighbors were urged to shelter in place as a Detroit Police Department Special Response Team converged on the scene at around 10 a.m. Wednesday, in the 16000 block of Constance, in the area of Grandmont and Joy Road.

Detroit Police Deputy Chief F.D. Hayes said the initial investigation stemmed from a murder in the 14000 block of Greenfield Tuesday evening.

He said police were out scouring the city overnight, searching for a vehicle linked to that crime.

Then, just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, a call came in about a man in a vehicle matching that description who was seen pointing a gun at passing cars on a Detroit-area freeway.

Police followed the vehicle to an apartment complex on Constance, where a barricaded gunman situation unfolded.

A short time later, Hayes said police went into the house and took seven people "of various ages" from the home and detained them for questioning.

"Some may possibly be juveniles, but we need to confirm that," Hayes told reporters.

At short time later, the DPD said two other people had been arrested.

Hayes said police believe that that danger has subsided, but that this remains an active situation.

Michigan State Police assisted with establishing a perimeter at the scene and cleared an upstairs unit. Officials said troopers helped a mother and two infant children to safety.

Police said they will provide more updates, including about the people taken into custody, as available.
