EASTPOINTE (WWJ) - Two teens who allegedly tried to steal a Kia were foiled by a K-9 police team and arrested late Thursday evening -- but the pair maybe behind a string of other car thefts in Metro Detroit authorities said.

The Eastpointe Police Department said the two suspects, a 16-year-old male from Detroit and a 15-year-old male from Eastpointe, were apprehended around 10:30 p.m. after residents in the 24000 block of Roxana called police for car alarms going off.

Officers responding to the location saw two males running on Almond near Stephens. A K-9 unit from St. Clair Shores helped out Eastpointe police and found one of the teens within minutes.

The other suspect was caught near the BP gas station on 9 Mile and Kelly. Both teens were arrested without further incident.

According to authorities, the suspects had broken the window out of a Kia vehicle in an attempt to steal it. Police suspect the pair are behind other vehicle thefts in Metro Detroit.

Police said this is the fourth Kia that was broken into in the last week and vehicle owners should be cautious.

"Surrounding communities are also having issues with KIAs being broken into or stolen," the department warned. "If you have a KIA, we recommend blocking it in your driveway or parking it in your garage."

Eastpointe police thanked the St. Clair Shores Police Department for their help in the case.
